MVs on Retro Displays
Published Year

Work type
Video editing, experimental art
Growing up in the 90s, a big part of my childhood was shaped by games built with 8-bit and 16-bit graphics. This sparked my curiosity to reimagine various music videos in a retro style, as if they had been released on vintage displays like the Apple III, Game Boy, or Game Boy Color. I took the experiment further by exploring how the videos would look if each pixel were replaced with an emoji matching its hue and saturation. Examples of this work include Aquaman and Earfquake.
Snoop Dogg (Ft. Pharrell) - “Drop It Like It’s Hot” w/8bit sound on Apple III
Drake - “Hotline Bing” visualized in ASCII w/8-bit sound on Macintosh
New Jeans - “Hypeboy” w/8-bit sound on Gameboy
Dean - “Instagram” Visualized in ASCII style
Beenzino - “Aquaman” Pixelated with emojis
Illionaire - “Profile” Multi-device video collage
Migos - “Stir Fry” Visualized in ASCII with 8-bit sound
Roddy Ricch - “The Box” w/8-bit sound on Gameboy
